Assessment of smart membrane and two different coatings on indoor environmental quality for living spaces, complimentary to the results measured within PM&VL2, PM&VL5, PM&VL6, PM&VL7 and PM&VL8.
Product description
Rothoblaas' tailored roof/facade smart membranes: Variable resistance to vapour diffusion: maximum protection for walls and excellent security in insulation. Easy to install thanks to its transparent quality; controls the passage of water vapour based on climate and humidity. The product has been researched and tested by external scientific bodies who have also simulated its behaviour in real conditions.Rothoblaas' tailored roof/facade sealing tapes: Excellent initial tack and superior adhesion strength on any surface. Guaranteed adhesion over time, even on dusty, porous or damp surfaces. Tecan's advanced functional coatings: Hydrophobic and photocatalytic coatings can reduce pollutants and improve indoor and outdoor air quality due to their self-cleaning, hydrophobic and photocatalytic properties. Tecan's advanced nanomaterials for energy efficient glazing system: a nanotechnology-based heat barrier treatment for glass surfaces, which blocks infrared solar radiation (IR) by more than 40%.
Building description
3-story building with a 90,00 m2 roof, 487,79m2 facade, 90,00m2 foundation, wooden doors and 30,46m2 carpentry windows with thermal break and triple glass.
Climate
Avilés has a temperate oceanic climate, with mild, rainy winters and cool, relatively rainy summers. The city is located on the coast of Asturias, in the north of Spain, where the climate is much cooler and more humid than in the rest of the country. The average temperature of the coldest months (January and February) is 9.7 °C, that of the warmest month (August) is 19.3 °C. Precipitation amounts are around 1,060 mm per year, the least rainy month is July with 45 mm of rainfall and the wettest is November with 135 mm of rainfall. Winter, from December to February, is mild and rainy. Although temperatures are generally mild, wind and humidity can increase the sensation of cold. Summer, from June to August or mid-September, is cool and cloudy. The weather is variable, so there may be drizzles, clouds and short showers. On average, there are approximately 1,665 hours of sunshine per year. Average humidity is 77%.

The building is in a renovation stage, nobody is living in it at the moment.

Actions
Baseline measurements were not performed since the building was in renovation stage when selected as LL. Renovation is ongoing since October 2023, Rothoblaas’ smart membrane was installed in November 2024. In February 2025 Tecnan’s functional coating was applied to the façade. Monitoring started in November 2025 when EURAC visited the site and it is ongoing since then.
